COPE & Climbing Trainings

Presented by the Iowa Challenge Training Consortium 

Become a COPE/Climbing Facilitator and help raise our youths Scouting adventures. As a member of the Iowa Challenge Training Consortium, Blackhawk Area Council can provide COPE and Climbing trainings in collaboration with Mid-Iowa, Hawkeye Area, Northeast Iowa and Winnebago councils. Three Training Modules are offered. Register for one, two or all three.

Who: Youth and Adult participants; Instructors-in-Training: at least 16 years old; Level I Instructors: at least 18 years old; Level II Instructors: at least 21 years old

Cost: $40 per session or $100 for all three sessions

Training Modules:

COPE & Climbing Foundation Training: Fundamentals of COPE & Climbing; Initiative Games; Safety Measures; Life Safety Systems; Emergency Procedures; Climbing Tower & Zip Line Operation

Dates: April 11-13, 2025 at Canyon Camp; or April 18-20, 2025 at Mitigwa Scout Reservation

COPE Instructor Training: Prerequisite: COPE & Climbing Foundation Training; More initiative games; High COPE & Tower Operation; Low COPE; Team-building

Date: May 2-4, 2025 at Howard H. Cherry Scout Reservation

Natural Rock Climbing Instructor Training: Prerequisite: COPE & Climbing Foundation Training; Climbing techniques; Climbing classification; Anchor systems; Site selection and management; Natural rock climbing programs at Backbone State Park

Date: September 26-28, 2025 at Camp CS Klaus
